Number of exam attempts
You have three attempts to pass the same exam. You are automatically registered for the first exam attempt. If you do not get a passing exam result after the first attempt, you must register yourself for another attempt. If you do not pass the exam after the 3rd (third) attempt, you may lose your right to study and you must leave us.
You can apply for a dispensation for a fourth exam attempt. See study regulations § 3-3. Number of exam attempts (The study regulations are in Norwegian).
Even if you have several exam attempts left, it is not certain that you will be able to use all three attempts. This can happen if you have lost your right to study, for example because you have exceeded the limit for how long you can be delayed, or used up the improvement attempt.
If you are a former bachelor's student, it may still be possible to take an exam you have not passed despite the fact that your right to study has expired. This is only possible if you have not used up your three attempts. You cannot apply for a fourth attempt.
See the study regulations § 3-2 (8) (The study regulations are in Norwegian).
Counting exam attempts
You have used one exam attempt when you do not appear for the exam and do not submit documentation of a valid absence.
Read more about exam no-shows here.
You have one improvement attempt
You can improve your grade if you have an active study right and have several exam attempts left. You are allowed to improve your exam grade one time in the same subject. You must register for the ordinary exam (not a new exam).

Grade improvement after you get your diploma
Your right to study ends when you have completed your studies. If you attend an education that leads to a diploma, you may still have the right to improve your grade up to one year after you received your diploma.
See study regulations § 4-6. (on improvement). (The study regulations is in Norwegian).
