Leave of absence from postgraduate and continuing education

Reasons for leave of absence

If you have a child during your studies, you are entitled to a leave of absence from studies during pregnancy and for childcare, cf. the Universities and University Colleges Act § 4-3 d. Leave of absence for childbirth also applies to the father, co-mother, and co-father.

You also have a statutory right to a leave of absence from studies, cf. the Universities and University Colleges Act § 4-3 e., for service under the Defence Act § 17, positions in student political bodies, and when there are other special reasons (such as illness and illness in family members).

Normally, a leave of absence is granted for up to one year.

Statutory leave of absence does not count towards the calculation of the period of study entitlement, cf. our Study Regulations § 2-2 (2).

Application for leave of absence

• How to apply for leave of absence

  To apply for a leave of absence, you must fill in this digital form: https://nettskjema.no/a/416982.

  The digital form requires the following information:

  • Your name
  • Email address
  • Username
  • Name of the study program/course
  • Semester for which you are requesting leave
  • Reason for requesting leave
  • Supporting dcumentation

• Who processes your application

  The Academic and Student Affairs Office processes your application.

  After you have submitted a documented application to our digital form (Nettskjema), we will decide whether to grant your leave of absence or not.

  When you return from the leave, you must take up everything you missed during the leave period. Each program/course may have its own rules regarding leaves of absence.

• Processing time

  It typically takes up to 4 weeks to process your application.

  If we need more time, you will receive a temporary response to your application.

  You will receive your answer in your PHS-email (“name”@phs.no).

  Remember to notify the Academic and Student Affairs Office well in advance before your return: studiekontoret.oslo@phs.no
