Leave of absence

If you are granted a leave of absence, you will be delayed in your studies. We distinguish between two types of leave. One can affect your study rights. The other will not affect your study rights. If you are a student in continuing and further education (EVU), you will only be entitled to statutory leave.

A leave of absence may result in you receiving less money from the Student Loan Fund (Lånekassen). Therefore, check with them before applying for leave. You apply for leave using a separate online form.

Two types of leave

Statutory right to leave

According to the University and College Act §§ 10-6 and 10-7, you have a number of statutory rights related to taking a leave of absence from your studies. The statutory right to leave is related to:

  • Parental leave (pregnancy and childcare)
  • Service under the Defense Act § 17
  • Positions in student political or elected bodies
  • Special reasons (e.g., illness)

Statutory right to leave is not included in the calculation of the study period.

You have the right to take leave as long as the need exists, but you must apply for it.
Use the online form "Apply for leave" and submit relevant documentation.

Other type of leave

The other type of leave you can apply for is when you want to take a break from your studies for other reasons without having a statutory right to take leave. See our study regulations § 2-7.

To be eligible to apply for another type of leave, you must have had study rights for at least one year.

Note that the leave will be included in the calculation of the study period. This means you will lose study time. Therefore, check how much study time you have left before applying for leave.

This type of leave is preferably granted for an entire academic year.

Other types of leave do not apply to continuing and further education (EVU).
